Another option to achieve a new lamp shade color is to use spray paint. Put some acrylic chalk or fabric paint in a paint tray or plastic cup and use a small flat paintbrush to apply an even coat to the shade. One of the most recommended paint to use on lamp shades is spray paint. Lay down newspaper or a drop cloth to protect any flooring or other surfaces.

There are spray paints designed specifically for use on plastic metal fabric or other materials. Take your lamp outside or to another well ventilated area such as a patio or garage with the garage door open. Set the lamp shade upright in the center of the covered work area. Another hobby paint that will produce a rich faux finish on a metal lamp shade is verdigris.

If the lamp shade will be used on a lamp located on a sun porch or other area that will be exposed to outdoor conditions be sure to use a spray paint designed. Cardboard box larger than your lamp. Turntable revolving cake stand lazy susan or pottery banding wheel optional. Using spray paint particularly on old lamp shade gives a modern and opaque finish.

Apply the primer paint in thin light coats. Rosin paper or drop cloth. Prepare the lampshade and your work area the same way as you would for spray paint. Using this paint straight from the can makes your work easier and quicker.

Paint the shade by hand with a paintbrush if you want to avoid using spray paint. Create faux verdigris with a multi part painting process using acrylic paints or just get a kit. Faux verdigris kits contain a two part formula that involves painting copper paint over the shade and then painting a reactive liquid over that to color. Lightly spray the outside of the lamp shade with upholstery fabric paint until it is completely covered.

An old metal lamp purchased at a secondhand store or rescued from a forgotten corner of your attic can be given new life with a quick coat of paint. Specialty paints for metal surfaces are available at home improvement stores although their effectiveness will depend on how well you clean the surface of the lamp. You can buy different colors of your desire and conveniently spray it to your shade. To avoid getting paint on the inside of the lamp shade use masking tape to attach a piece of plastic wrap in order the cover the inside of the shade.
